• He became a Jesuit Priest.
  He entered the Jesuit novitiate at Hodder in 1847, under Father Tracy Clarke was ordained in 1853, and worked for two years on the mission at Alnwick. In 1856 he was sent as military chaplain to the Crimea, where inter alia, he took charge of the Sisters of Mercy, who were serving in the hospitals at Scutari, and afterwards at Balaclava.
