Note for: Albert Woods, 24 JUL 1907 - 10 JUN 1982 Index
Albert was called Arthur by his wife Vic. At the time of his marriage he
lived at 31, Council Cottages, Lunsford Lane, Larkfield, Kent.
Served in the Navy as a Royal Marine.
Had tattoo on left wrist "Rosie".
When discharged from Navy 29/4/1931 address was 19 Richmond Road,
Gillingham, Kent.
Gave Mabel as next of kin when in Navy.
In 1925 gave job as "house boy".
Gravel Pit House may have been a workhouse and mother may have died
around the time of his birth.
May have been fostered out to several places, one of which may have been
in Selling, near the church, perhaps with a schoolmaster.
He presented the "Arthur Woods Trophy" to his fire brigade. It was
originally a shooting trophy but was now presented for fire brigade
drill. He worked for Reeds International who had there own fire
brigade. The trophy was presented between 1956 and 1980. Vic Woods now
has it along with his Navy medals and several other cups and fire brigade
long service medals.
He died peacefully at home during the night.
We must assume that Silas is not the father of Albert and that he had
probably died by the time Albert was born in 1907 (Silas would be about
55). Given that Rose says that her mother died when she was 3 (this
would be about 1908) could it be that Ellen (Woods?) died during
childbirth or could it simply be that she abandoned Rose and ran away
with another man, Rose being told that her mother had died.
Notes
Note for: Ellen Woods, UNKNOWN - UNKNOWN Index
Could be a 'Woods' or 'Smith' or 'Nye'. With or without Elizabeth.
Birth certificate of Albert Woods shows mother as Ellen Elizabeth Woods
of Rhode Common, Selling in Kent. No father shown.
Birth certificate of Samuel shows maiden name as Ellen Smith of
Winchester, father Silas Beebe.
Birth certificates of Arthur and Nellie show maiden name as Ellen Nye of
Bedford, father Silas Beebe.
Birth certificates of George, Mabel, William, Jane, Rose(1), Rose(2) show
maiden name as Ellen Woods, father Silas Beebe.
Are these all the same person?
If we assume that it is the same person, then her first child by Silas
was born in 1883 (Elizabeth) and the last in 1907 (Albert Woods). This
gives a child bearing range of 24 years. Silas had his second child
Harriet by his first wife Frances in 1877 when he would have been about
24 so presumably did not "marry" Ellen Woods until after 1877 but before
1883. If we assume that the latest Ellen Woods had Albert (in 1907) was
age 47 then she would have been born after 1860. Similarly the youngest
she would be to have her daughter Elizabeth in 1883 is about 15
suggesting the birth of Ellen Woods between 1860 -1868 and her death
after 1907.

Note for: Edward John Beale, 16 JAN 1897 - 21 NOV 1985 Index
Address at time of marriage is given as Ruscombe in Berkshire. He was a
Fruit Foreman and I assume he would have met Rose while he was working in
Kent fruit picking.

Note for: Frances Eleanor Spriggs, ABT. 1854 - Index
Frances father is Thomas Spriggs, a parchment maker.
Apart from the marriage certificate between Frances and Silas there is no
other information about Frances. Given her age as 19 on the marriage
certificate she will have been born around 1854. Try to find her in the
General Index and Parish Records.
Birth certificates for her two daughters each show the mother as Frances
Helena Beebe formerly Spriggs.
Signed as F.H. Beebe.
