- Edward was awarded the Military Cross "T/Lieutenant Edward Cuddon Rayner, 1st Battalion, The Hampshire Regiment."
The award was announced in the London Gazette Suplement dated 2nd April 1919, the citation being published later on 10th Dec 1919.
"For great courage and enterprise. On 24th October 1918. At Monchaux the company detailed to take the village was held up by intense machine gun fire. On his own initiative he led a party of twelve men to the northern end of the village, and, wading the river, entered it with one man only. This man was sent back to guide the remainder. A few minutes afterwards he captured an officer, whom he told to call upon his men to surrender. As a result over 100 enemy laid down their arms."
