Notes

  • <Info from Shane Woollett>

Mother re-married (HYNDMAN) but didn't change Abner's surname. When they moved
from Greymouth? to Westport Abner cycled to save the cost of the fare.

    6th July 1993.

Dad left school at a very early age and got a job (5 bob a week) and ga
all his money to his Mother, to help support the family, until he was 21.
They moved up to Buller when he was about 16 or so (I think) - firstly him
and his Step Father (Grandad HYNDMAN) and worked on a farm at a place called
"Old Man Rock". A beach farm that is an 8 mile beach walk from the little
river mouth town of Mokihinui. Dad later built the family home here and went
into the sawmilling business in the early 1930's with his partner a Mr Ted
MARRIS, who also happened to be his wife's (my Mother) brother, who also
married his half sister, Mable HYNDMAN. The two families lived next door to
each other at Mokihinui from then on.

    7th August 1993.

Abner was remembered as always wearing a black hat. During one race day he
gave Ralph a tip to bet on a horse - it being a dead cert Sure enough the
horse won. This impressed Ralph who had even remembered the name of the horse
    up until a while ago.
