Notes
- 1881 in Maidstone at 91 Upper Fant Road.
1851 census as the step-son of John Tolhurst working as a string (rope) makers labourer.
1866 living in St Peters Street Maidstone.
Address for most of his life was 91 Upper Fant Road, Maidstone.
He was a journeyman ropemaker. The Ordinance Survey map from the 1860's shows the ropemakers yard, literally two minutes walk from Upper Fant Road.
The 1881 census shows a number of rope-making families living nearby such as the Woolven's (with whom there is a family connection somewhere). There was even a pub called the Ropemakers Arms.
The ropeyard was run by J. Clifford & Co. in the 1860's - it was still being run by them in the 1990's.
