John was baptised in 1560/61 and died in 1617. There is a dedication on the floor of Elmsted church, which mentions John Cloke, gentleman of Northlye [Northleigh]. He was married but had no issue. In his will he left Northleigh to the son of his sister Katherine b1556 d1599/00 at Elham who m(1)1580 Richard Woollett in Elham and m(2)1596/97 Jhon Gynder in Elham. Their son was also called Richard Woollett b1585 d1654 who m1613 Catherine Beane. Also mentioned in John's will was land called Littleworth of 36 acres. This is probably what is now called Little Gains, a short distance from Dean Farm and Spong Farm. CKS 32/44/386&32/45/173. The will of the Richard Woollett who died in 1654 instructed that Northleigh be sold to pay debts. Many other properties are mentioned in and around Elham including one described as 'ancient'. BL/PROB/11/444. Richard Woollett is mentioned in the Kent Subsidy Rolls for 1623-1628 (book in CKS library).

Northleigh is probably what is now called Old Leigh Place in the Northleigh area of Elmsted. This property cannot easily be found as it lies at the end of a no through road. It is a spectacular example of buildings of that era. It is not known if Northleigh (Old Leigh Place) was in fact sold by Richard Woollett's family.

From the Churchwardens' Accounts a John Woollett was a tenant of Thorn Farm, Northleigh in Elmsted and Scarps Field on the Elmsted/Stelling border from 1832 until 1835. The Tithe Award of 1840 confirmed this and also gave the owner as John Newport and the area as 16 acres 33 perches.

The census records for 1841 do not mention John Woollett. However they do say that William Woollett was the occupier of a property at Northleigh from 1861 when he was 38 until 1891 when he was 69. His occupation was a grazier.

On John Cloke marrying Elizabeth Woollett, my notes say: Generation 12, John Cloke baptised 1809 died 1868 married Caroline Wollate baptised 1812 had issue but line ceases.
